The Fòcara of Novoli: roots and secrets of the largest pyre in the Mediterranean

    Annual

The Fòcara of Novoli, in the province of Lecce, is now famous far beyond the borders of Puglia for the mammoth size of the pyre, "the largest in the Mediterranean". And yet for the impressive fireworks and concerts that take place on the fire-lit stage, which revisit the traces of tradition with a decidedly contemporary approach. But beyond the great spectacle burns the heart of the festival that has very ancient roots, in which apotropaic rites of pagan origins, the devotion to Sant'Antonio Abate - patron saint of Novoli, guardian of fire and animals - and the peculiar peasant identity of the town linked to the cultivation of vines are grafted.

June 15 is the Feast of St. Vitus, very much felt by the community of Spinazzola (Bat). Another event of great appeal is in mid-August: the celebrations of the patron saint of the town, Maria Santissima del Bosco, are an opportunity for the return home of emigrants, and to them, on August 15, the Feast of the emigrant is dedicated.
