The experience
Discover and practice ancient crafts: work Puglian stone with your own hands
From the famous trulli to the coastal towers that guard the sea, from the farmers’ “pagghiare” to the dry stone walls that design the country roads, a UNESCO heritage site, stone is the great protagonist of the Puglian landscape and the history of the generations that have inhabited it over the centuries.
Learn to work Puglian stone with your own hands at the Perle di Memoria Museum in Locorotondo!
Puglian stone workshop
Here, guided by an experienced stonemason, you can test your manual skills and try your hand at techniques for working soft stones such as Puglian tuff and Lecce stone. You will be able to create a mortar, indispensable for the preparation of many typical dishes of the region (from pounded wheat to mostaccioli), or, for example, a pinnacle, just like those that camp on the trulli acting as a trait d’union with the sky and as the unmistakable “trademark” of the master trullaro.
In the spaces of the Museum, designed to offer a multimedia, interactive and immersive experience in the material and immaterial culture of the Itria Valley, we will take you on a discovery of the ancient crafts of your ancestors and the life of the communities of the area, among tools of the artisan and peasant tradition and precious photographic and audiovisual evidence, part of the prestigious Archive of the American ethnomusicologist Alan Lomax, collected in Locorotondo in the 1954 research campaign.
